Well we’re off.

We may have left three hours late, but we’re finally on our way to Canada!

Why did we leave three hours late? Oh… well, you know…

We had some issues with the wiring between the trailer and my minivan, but after stopping and conferring with four different mechanics/trailer salesmen at four different locations in Athens and Springfield, we finally had an answer. We’re thanking God for the workers at ____. They fixed our issue and refused to charge us for labor. What a blessing!

Chance and I and a missions team are heading to Toronto Canada to help some of our church’s missionaries put on a Vacation Bible School for the community children.

I plan to journal daily about our experiences.

But now, since the only other exciting part of our traveling day included a story about a locked bathroom door and Chance telling funny, anonymous stories about church members, I figured I should take this time to introduce you to the people who are currently sitting in my minivan with me!

Don’t worry, I asked them very important interview questions…

Missions Team Members:

Doug:

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Sharon’s homemade vanilla ice cream [ahem… is he trying to win brownie points?]

What are some of your hobbies?

Woodworking, riding my motorcycle, and I used to like sports

If you could be any animal, what would it be? And why?

What excites you most about our trip to Canada?

Being with you guys [awww…]. And I’ve never been to Canada before. I’m excited to go there. I’m excited to see how the Lord is going to work.

What do you expect God to teach you about yourself during this trip?

How to be open to the unknown. I’m kind of a black-and-white kind of guy. Going into a situation where things aren’t laid-out and completely black and white makes me uncomfortable, but that’s ok. I’m excited to see how God will work through that. [At this point, we reminded him that he is dressing up as the panda all week – he is going to be black-and-white! Perfect!]

Chance:

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

Orange Sherbet

What are some of your hobbies?

Reading, technology gadgets, building things (woodworking, inventions)

If you could be any animal, what would it be? And why?

Allen [our Shih-tzu dog]. He has us as caregivers and he gets to sleep all day!

Getting to know the people on our trip. Also, to see God working in a different place – even a different country.

As of today [and our three hour delay] – patience!

Sharon:

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

My homemade ice cream. Vanilla.

What are some of your hobbies?

Geo-caching with my grandchildren, biking with Doug, reading when I have time

If you could be any animal, what would it be? And why?

I would like to be a bear too, but not for the same reasons as Marsha. I like hugs. [Awww…]

I am a three-time cancer survivor from three different primary sites.

What excites you most about our trip to Canada?

Getting to know the people I’m traveling with and taking on something I’ve never done before.

Every lesson that God has taught me in my lifetime has been a surprise. I’m waiting for Him to surprise me again!

Schwan’s triple-lemon frozen yogurt

Reading, landscaping, decorating-projects in my house

If you could be any animal, what would it be? And why?

A bear. Because when it gets cold, I could crawl in my hole until spring when it starts warming up.

Tell us a lesser-known fact about yourself:

I am a Pollyanna-type person – when something bad happens to me, I am always thankful it wasn’t something worse.

What excites you most about our trip to Canada?

Getting to know some of the people I see every week at church better. And at this point, just GETTING to Canada!

What do you expect God to teach you about yourself during this trip?

To be more open to people that I don’t know well.

What do you expect God to teach you about yourself during this trip?

To be a better person and to get a spiritual-uplift.

Ginger:

What’s your favorite ice cream flavor?

I can’t eat ice cream anymore! I can’t actually eat ANYthing anymore! But if I could, I would eat a cookie dough blizzard until I was sick!

What are some of your hobbies?

Reading, knitting, reading blogs

If you could be any animal, what would it be?

A flamingo. I’d love to have the balance to stand on one foot…

Tell us a lesser-known fact about yourself:

My passport still contains my maiden name and has a picture from when I was 12. And no, you cannot see it… And at this point, I just remembered that I didn’t pack my marriage license. They might not let me back in to the U.S. Canada is now my new home… I’ll miss you all.

What excites you most about our trip to Canada?

The kids! And the volunteers. Also, I’m excited to get to know everyone involved in this trip.

What do you expect God to teach you about yourself during this trip?

Holy cow, He’s already taught me to trust Him. It’s difficult to plan a VBS at a local church – let alone a church in another country that I’ve never been to. But through all the planning, I’ve felt a peace because God is going to use this trip for His glory!

Well, there you have it! We made it to Michigan (at 2:00 a.m.) More tonight!
