I consider myself to be a pretty decent cook. I am, of course, my mother’s daughter. Also, I like to cook. I am organized in my menu planning and shopping. I have a working-knowledge of food, ingredients and many basic recipes.
But… sometimes recipes just don’t go as planned. I (ahem) recently had one of those days!
The other night, I decided to make some homemade caramel-corn. (Has to be homemade because most of the boxed stuff contains milk products. Welcome to my life.)
Here’s how my night went:
I started by popping popcorn in olive oil on my stove. (I do this at least once a week. Got it down to an art. No issues yet.)
I then salted the popcorn…
…and set it aside.
Next, I melted a little margarine in the bottom of the pot I just made the popcorn in.
Then, I dumped in 2/3 cup of white sugar.
When the sugar began to heat up, I started stirring. And stirring.
But then, presto-change-o, the sugar became caramelized.
I quickly added a few tablespoons of water and a little more margarine.
At this point, things started heading south. Like really far south…
Instead of being able to pour my beautiful, smooth caramel onto my warm, salty popcorn…
I ended up with very, very hard balls of sugary caramel mixed with fluffy popcorn.
No clue where I went wrong! Maybe when the water was added?
I promise this won’t be my last attempt, but this event did not go down in history as my greatest culinary feat…
Anyone want to come over for popcorn?!
